Lay The Place
As you’ll know, horse racing laying systems are ten-a-penny these days and it normally takes a fair bit of persuasion to convince me of the merits of most of them. In fact, wherever possible, I like to run my own backdated reports to verify at least a year or two worth of results and it’s amazing how many of them simply don’t make the grade. However, that isn’t the case with Lay The Place.
It would have taken a monumentous effort to backtest this system completely, but I was able to check back on batches of results using Betfair’s historical data (a task in itself, as you’ll know if you’ve ever attempted to use it) and I have to say that my initial impressions (and also the results I’ve experienced in the last couple of months) have been very positive. Surprisingly, I haven’t seen another laying system take the same approach before, so that perked my interest.
Unlike The Cambridge Target System which is quite time-consuming, Lay The Place is simplicity itself and it will take you all of one minute a day to know which races you should be betting in. There’s no form to study, no intricate data analysis, no fancy staking plans and you don’t need to be at your PC all day. It really is very simple, but that suits me fine.
There isn’t very much I can say about the system guide, because it’s all summed up on a single page, but like Craig has said a few times on here I’d prefer that to dozens of pages of blurb that don’t really tell you anything you don’t know already. All that really matters to us is whether the system works or not and I don’t have any reason to dispute the advertised profits.
For the purposes of this system test I’m going to be laying two horses in each race to win £50 each. The author doesn’t mention what size of bank you would need to operate at this level, but most of the time the selections you’re laying are either odds-on or around the even money mark and the strike-rate is in the region of 70%, so I’ll assume a bank of £2000.
As always, updates will be posted daily in the system testing area of our website.

Lay The Place : Final Review
That’s us reached the end of the trial for Lay The Place now and I’m pleased to say that June lived up to expectations with the results being on par with my own for the last few months and also with those that are advertised on the website.
Here are some stats for you to get stuck into:
- 46 winning bets from 67 races, a 69% strike-rate.
- 15 winning days from 25 total betting days, a 60% strike-rate.
- The most profitable winning day generated a profit of £151.
- The average profit per day on the winning days was £71.
- The worst losing day lost £160, although the average losing day was only -£35.
Quite impressive by anyone’s standards.
Now, the first thing to note here is that I set aside a bank of £2000 for running this trial, laying two horses in each race on the place market to win £50 each, but the largest dent the bank took was only -£75 and that was on the second day of the test. From there on it was profit all the way and I could comfortably have got away with using as much as £200 stakes without even breaking sweat, which would have pushed the profit up to almost £3000 for the month! I probably wouldn’t recommend that, but using £100 stakes with a £2000 bank (meaning just short of £1500 profit), or £50 stakes with a £1000 bank would have been more than enough to cover everything.
The number of losing days was minimal and more noticably there was only one really bad day where I lost £160. If you take that day out the average loss on the other losing days was a mere £21. Even considering all losing days the average loss was only £35. That’s good going when you consider that you have the potential to make £95 profit per race using £50 stakes.
All in all, I’ve got to say that Lay The Place is the type of system that suits me down to the ground. It takes a minimal amount of time to operate, you know exactly which races you’ll be betting in the evening before racing, it uses straightforward level stakes and the strike-rate is high enough that you can comfortably go in with large stakes without the risk of breaking the bank when you have a losing day.
Nice strike-rate, great profits, easy as you like to operate - looks like a winner to me! ![]()

Another excellent day for Lay The Place today and as it’s the end of the month, plus the fact we’ve now been running this for a full month (albeit only with 25 actual betting days) I think we should close the trial period at that. I mentioned how much I liked this one before even starting it and this month hasn’t been any different to any other - just good solid bread and butter wages.
That’s the way I like it….. no fancy staking plans, no long losing periods, just straightforward level staking and a nice steady month-on-month profit.
